Value Chain

The value chain in the livestock production industry has been defined as a “smile curve” owing to the form it takes. The following graph shows the value chain and the place occupied by T&T in it.

Genetic selection companies, together with pharaceutical companies and livestock feed additive producers, are those with the highest value-added in the livestock porduction value chain given that their contributions enable the value and production of the entire chain to increase. Meat processing and dairy product companies together with the makers of pre-cooked meals are those providing the most post-production value-added. Abattoirs are the bottom of the chain given that they do not add value to the product.
